Install-free games are a sixth of China's game market — WeChat mini games in 2026
Install-free mini-program games earned RMB 31.66 billion in China in the first half of 2026, a sixth of the game market growing three times as fast, and WeChat is now spending to keep players rather than to find new ones.
Mini-program games — played inside apps such as WeChat without installing anything — earned RMB 31.657 billion in China in the first half of 2026, up 36.01% while the whole game market grew 12.17%, for a 16.8% share; about two-thirds of that revenue has come from in-app purchases since 2024. After Apple's Mini Apps Partner Program cut the iPhone commission to 15% in November 2025, WeChat waived its own fee through 2026 so developers keep an estimated 88% of iPhone purchases, and new games pay no platform share on their first RMB 10 million. At its 27 May 2026 developer conference, WeChat — past 500 million monthly players, 40% of them over 40 — made long-term retention its theme. August's top-grossing chart was led by a tower-defence game, with three strategy titles in the top ten.
Mini games played inside apps like WeChat, with nothing to install, earned RMB 31.66 billion in the first half of 2026 — a sixth of China's game market. They grew 36% while the market grew 12%. WeChat now spends to keep players rather than to find more.
What a mini game is
fact WeChat mini games (微信小游戏) are games that open right inside the WeChat app. There is no store download or install — tap, and it opens. They started in 2017 with Jump Jump (跳一跳), passed 500 million monthly players by May 2026, and each player spends more than 60 minutes a day on average (DoNews, checked 29 September).
fact China's game industry report counts games that run inside apps like this separately, as “mini-program games” (小程序游戏). The report comes from the Game Publishing Committee of the China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association, and the market figures in this post follow its count — they are not WeChat's alone (Xinhua, checked 29 September).
An app-store game opens only after you see an ad, go to the store and download it. A mini game opens when you tap it. This market started from that one difference.
A sixth of the market
fact In the first half of 2026, China's mini-program games earned RMB 31.657 billion, 36.01% more than a year earlier. Over the same period the whole Chinese game market grew 12.17% to RMB 188.45 billion. Mini games grew at three times the market's pace (Xinhua, the Game Publishing Committee's January–June 2026 China Game Industry Report, checked 29 September).
fact The pace itself has slowed. In 2024 the segment grew 99.18% to RMB 39.836 billion, nearly doubling (Beijing Business Today), and in 2025 it grew 34.39% to RMB 53.535 billion (Yicai). A market that doubled every year now grows by about a third.
fact Its share still rose every year. Of the whole market (RMB 325.783 billion in 2024, RMB 350.789 billion in 2025), mini-program games took 12.2% in 2024, 15.3% in 2025 and 16.8% in the first half of 2026 (CNR, 21st Century Business Herald, checked 29 September).
fact Where the money comes from has barely moved in two years. In-app purchases were 68.7% in 2024, 68.11% in 2025 and 66.8% in the first half of 2026, with ads making up the rest (same reports). Two-thirds of mini-game revenue comes from purchases, not ads.
Which games earn
fact In GameLook's August 2026 top 100, compiled from the WeChat mini-game revenue chart, the No. 1 game was 《向僵尸开炮》, up one place from July. The top ten held five casual genres, three strategy (SLG) games and two RPGs (GameLook, checked 29 September).
| Rank | Game | Meaning | Genre |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 向僵尸开炮 | Fire at the Zombies | Tower defence |
| 2 | 疯狂水世界 | Crazy Water World | Management sim |
| 3 | 三国:冰河时代 | Three Kingdoms: Ice Age | Strategy (SLG) |
| 4 | 无尽冬日 | Endless Winter Days | Strategy (SLG) |
| 5 | 浪漫餐厅 | Romantic Restaurant | Merge & match |
| 6 | 灵画师 | Spirit Painter | RPG |
| 7 | 永远的蔚蓝星球 | Forever Azure Planet | Tower defence |
| 8 | 跃动小子 | Bouncing Kid | RPG |
| 9 | 向末日开炮 | Fire at Doomsday | Strategy (SLG) |
| 10 | 梦幻消除战 | Dream Match Battle | Merge & match |
fact Across the whole top 100, RPGs are the most common, with 40; strategy games number only six but earn a lot from few titles. No. 1 and No. 9 come from 大梦龙途, No. 6 and No. 8 from 波克城市. 三七互娱 placed the most titles, eight, but its highest was 28th (same article).
fact No. 4, 《无尽冬日》, is the WeChat mini-game version of the game that 点点互动, part of 世纪华通, publishes abroad as Whiteout Survival. It launched in April 2024 and reached No. 1 in revenue within 29 days (CNR), then lost that spot in the second quarter of 2025 to 《向僵尸开炮》, a tower-defence game mixed with roguelike elements (Gamigion, checked 29 September).
The top of the chart belongs to games with light, short rounds and long progression. Tower defence, strategy and RPGs all tie a quick session to long growth.
iPhone payments, at last
fact Because of Apple's rules, WeChat mini programs could not take virtual payments on iOS from 2017 on. To top up a game, players used workarounds such as jumping to a third-party page or paying by QR code (Sina Finance, checked 29 September).
fact The wall came down on 13 November 2025, when Apple launched its Mini Apps Partner Program. It set the in-app purchase commission for mini apps and mini games that run inside another app at 15%, half the standard 30%, and Bloomberg reported that Apple and Tencent had agreed to apply 15% to WeChat's mini apps (TechCrunch, checked 29 September). The next day, WeChat officially announced iOS virtual payment support for mini programs (21st Century Business Herald).
fact WeChat's 2026 virtual payment policy goes a step further. Payments that qualify under Apple's program normally give developers 70% of the Apple purchase amount, but until 31 December 2026 WeChat waives its own technical service fee. Developers keep everything left after Apple's commission — about 88% of the Apple purchase amount, by WeChat's estimate (WeChat developer documentation, checked 29 September).
In a market where two-thirds of revenue is purchases, the iPhone was a device where payment had been blocked for eight years. 2026 is the first year since that door opened.
WeChat turned to keeping players
fact The theme of the WeChat mini game developer conference, held in Hangzhou on 27 May 2026, was “from connection to evergreen” (从连接到长青). WeChat said it would systematically improve player return, precision marketing, version updates and the cross-device experience this year. Developers passed 500,000, 80 games had more than a million daily players, and more than 300 games earned over RMB 10 million in a quarter (DoNews, checked 29 September).
fact It is handing money back, too. Under the 2026 policy, a new game pays no platform share on its first RMB 10 million in revenue. If its monthly revenue reaches RMB 10 million during the new-game period, the same terms extend up to RMB 50 million for six months from then (WeChat developer documentation).
fact Reporting its second quarter on 12 August, Tencent said marketing services revenue rose 22% to RMB 43.6 billion, noting that closed-loop marketing within Weixin helps mini games and mini shops advertise more effectively on Tencent's ad properties (Tencent results release, checked 29 September).
Mini games earn money on WeChat and also pay WeChat for ads. The longer a game survives, the longer its ad spending keeps coming, even if WeChat takes less commission. That reads as the reason WeChat can afford to clear new games' fees.
fact At the same conference, WeChat named PC and AI as its next axes. Forty percent of PC mini-game monthly players play only on PC, and their playing time and revenue per user are 100% and 130% higher than on mobile. AI was presented as a tool to make assets for ad-supported games cheaper and better-looking (DoNews).
Who plays
fact WeChat told the conference its players are 53% male and 47% female. By age, 24–40-year-olds are half, those over 40 are 40%, and the remaining 10% are under 24 (DoNews, checked 29 September).
Four in ten are over forty. With no install to get past, even people who never went looking for games in a store become players.
For a small studio making casual games, what these numbers say is clear. Games that open without an install button are already a sixth of one country's game market, and two-thirds of that money comes from purchases. So that our games open with a single tap outside the store as well, now is the time to widen the path.
